Hajjat Sophie Nantongo, born on October 10, 1983, in Kasubi, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda, is a celebrated Ugandan singer and actress known for her contributions to the Afrobeats and Kadongo Kamu music genres.
Early Life and Education Sophie was born to Erias Bisegerwa, a Muslim and owner of Happyland Theatre in Kibuye, and Sarah Bisegerwa, a devout Seventh Day Adventist who owned a shop in Kikuubo. She is the youngest of three siblings. Her early education included attending Nakasero Nursery, Namugongo Girls’ Boarding Primary School, Gombe Secondary School for O’level, and Agha Khan Secondary School for A’level.
Musical Career Sophie’s musical journey began in 2000 when she performed Judy Boucher’s "Send Me the Pillow" at a pub in Namasuba, which led to her joining the Power Pro band. She later became a member of the Stone Band and then Eagles Production band, where she honed her skills in both singing and acting. After leaving Eagles Production in 2002 due to exploitation and lack of payment, she embarked on a solo career. Her debut album, Liberty, written by Silver Kyagulanyi, launched her solo career, followed by the successful album Ekisanja, featuring hits like "Wansumulula" and "Abakazi Ekitubonyabonya Butayiga."
Personal Life Sophie’s personal life has been marked by challenges. She was married to Hajji Kagoma, but the marriage ended after discovering he had other wives and a child with her younger sister. She later entered a relationship with football coach Sam Simbwa, which also faced difficulties.
Transition to Agriculture In recent years, Sophie has taken a step back from music to focus on agriculture. She has established several farms and finds fulfillment in this new venture.
